Help! I’ve got a sore throat

So you’ve got a sore throat but when you look at all the cough and cold remedies they’re all packed with sugar – whether in a packet of lozenges or bottles of medicine, even the good old fashioned lemon and honey drink is off-limits.

Suffering a winter cold and the cough that often remains as a result is miserable.

No wonder we all usually reach for the throat sweets, hot lemon drinks and cough syrups that all rely on that old adage of a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Unfortunately many of these remedies contain enough sugar to undo your good low carb work.

The good news is that there are plenty of remedies you can use to help relieve your symptoms without knocking yourself out of fat burning mode.

Try gargling with hot salted water, or drinking hot water with lemon and ginger (without the honey) or hot water with a tablespoon of cider vinegar or coconut oil.

If your throat is really sore and you (and your partner) can bear it, try chewing a peeled clove of garlic. The anti-inflammatory properties of garlic will calm your throat. Follow it up with lemon and parsley to help neutralise the lasting effects on your breath!

For a cough and catarrh cough remedy that does not contain sugar look for Potters Herbals Vegetable Cough Remover and Catarrh Mixture. We have used them in our family for years.

They are effective, not syrupy and if you like liquorish and aniseed they taste great!
